How does Solar Tube Collectors work?
Solar tube collectors, also known as evacuated tube collectors, harness solar energy to heat water through a straightforward process:
Evacuated Tubes: These collectors consist of rows of cylindrical glass tubes, each containing an absorber tube. The air is removed (evacuated) from the space between the outer and inner tubes to create a vacuum, minimizing heat loss through conduction and convection.
Absorption of Solar Energy: The absorber tube inside each evacuated tube is coated with a selective absorber material that efficiently absorbs solar radiation across a wide spectrum of wavelengths.
Transfer of Heat: When sunlight strikes the absorber tube, it converts solar energy into heat. This heat is then transferred to the fluid (usually water or a heat transfer fluid) flowing through the absorber tube via conduction.
Circulation System: A circulation system, typically consisting of pipes, pumps, and controls, circulates the heated fluid from the solar collectors to a storage tank or directly into the hot water supply system.
Storage and Usage: The heated water or heat transfer fluid is stored in a well-insulated tank for later use. It can be used for domestic hot water needs, space heating, or other applications requiring heated water.
